Mercuris' Chest - Mode d'emploi

Instructions

The Legend of Zelda :
Mercuris' Chest
2.0 demo version

Zelda : Mercuris' Chest is a free fan game developed with Multimedia Fusion and totally independent from Nintendo games.

This demo version is a technical demo in which you will find only one dungeon that will give you a general idea of what the game will technically look like in the end. So there is no storyline : you just have to complete the dungeon ! But to do so, you will have to foil many traps, solve hard puzzles and beat a lot of enemies. But before you can wander in this demo, please read the instructions below to know how to play the game and to be aware of a few important pieces of advice.

System requirements

Zelda : Mercuris' Chest only runs under Windows operating systems. We did our best to improve the quality of the development, but the game still uses a lot of resources. You may have difficulties to run the game correctly with not enough powerful computers. You should not have any problems if you're equipped with at least a 350 Mhz processor and 64 Mb of RAM. Anyway, you're asked to close any other program while playing to the game.

Choose a save file

After the game starts, you will be asked to choose a save file. The blue icon in the upper-left corner shows what action can be performed with the Space bar. You can read here "Choose". The green icon represents the "C" of your keyboard.

Select one save file and press the Space bar to choose it. If the selected file is empty, you will be asked your name. Select the different letters with the directional keys and press "C" to choose each of them.

  • Press the Space bar to end and choose your name (or select "OK" and press "C").
  • To erase one letter, select the left-arrow in the lower-right corner of the screen and press "C".
  • To return to the previous screen, select the cancel arrow in the lower-right corner of the screen and press "C".

You can also erase a save file or quit the game by selecting the corresponding options and pressing the Space bar.

Commands

The commands can be customized in the Options subscreen and you can also play with a paddle or a joystick (refer to the "Options subscreen" part). Here are the default settings for your keyboard. Next, we will suppose you're playing with these commands.

  • Directional keys : Move Link, select options in the different subscreens. If you're near a block which can be grabbed, hold the directional keys to grab and move it.
  • Space bar: The action key. The space bar can be used to lift/throw objects, to activate switches, to read some messages, to open doors and chests, and so on... The blue icon will display what kind of action can be performed.
  • "C" key: Swing your sword. You have a sword and a shield right from the start. Press the "C" to swing your sword. Hold it a few seconds and release to perform a spin attack, stronger than the sword attack.
  • "D" key: Pause the game. It displays one of the four subscreens : Select item, Map, Options and Quest status. The subscreens are detailed below. To switch from one subscreen to another, you just have to use the left and right directional keys. Press "D" once again to resume and return to the game.
  • "X" & "V" keys: Use items. In the game, set your items to the "X" and "V" keys to use them.

Whenever you get lost, check the blue icon in the upper-left corner of the screen : it displays what kind of action can be performed by pressing the Space bar. The green icon represents the "C" key.

In-game

We already talked about the blue and green icon in the upper-left corner of the screen: the blue icon is the Action Icon (Space bar key), the green icon represents your sword ("C" key), your items are set to the two gray icons ("X" and "V" keys) and the red icon pause/resume the game ("D" key).

In the upper-right corner of the screen are displayed Heart Containers. They represent your life jauge : when you have used up all your hearts, you loose (Game over). You can fill your life jauge with small hearts hidden in bushes, pots or abandoned by the enemies you beat. When you start a new game, your life jauge contains three Heart Containers but you can get a fourth Heart Container if you find the four Pieces of Heart hidden in the demo.

Below the life jauge may appear a green bar that represents your magic meter. It will be displayed once you will get the item that needs magic power. If your magic meter is empty, you won't be able to use it. You can fill your magic meter with magic decanters. And be careful! Some enemies can suck up your magic power..

In the lower-left corner of the screen are displayed your rupees. Rupees are the legal change in this game so find as many rupees as you can! Green rupees worth one rupee whereas blue and red ones worth 5 and 20 rupees respectively. You can't have more than 99 rupees.

Map subscreen

If you're outside the dungeon, the map subscreen will display your position in the world map.

If you're inside the dungeon, this subscreen will display the dungeon map (if you got it). The map displays the layout of all the rooms, the stairs and the entrance(s). If you got the Compass, it will display your position and the position of the chests and the Boss as well.

Select item subscreen

The Select item subscreen displays all the items you have. You can select an item with the directional keys and see some information about it by pressing the Action key. The items shown in the middle of the subscreen can be set to "X" and "V" by pressing the corresponding keys.

Options subscreen

You can use the Options subscreen to custom the game to your needs.

  • Fullscreen: Move the cursor onto "Fullscreen" and press the Action key to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. You can also change the display mode by pressing "F5" while in-game.
  • Mode-7 quality: This option is used to define the mode-7 quality (Low, Medium or High). But this feature is not used in this demo so this option has no effect here.
  • Commands: Move your cursor on the command you want to custom (Action, Sword, Item 1, Item 2 or Pause) in the "Keyboard" column. Then, press the new key you want to set to it. It is all the same to custom your joypad. Move your cursor in the "Joypad" column and press the different buttons you want to custom.

Quest status subscreen

The Quest status subscreen displays information about your progress in the game. Three slots in the lower-right corner of the subscreen show your current equipment: sword, shield and tunic. In the middle of the subscreen, three other slots show your wallet, your Bomb Bag and your quiver. You can also see how many Pieces of Heart you got so far. The big empty square on the right is unused in the demo. The real game will use this square to display the dungeons you've completed.

Saving your game

You can save whenever you want when you are in the subscreens by pressing "C". When you restart the game, you only have to choose the correct save file to be warped to the entrance of the last dungeon you got into. If you die, you will be asked if you want to save: you can't lose your progress.

Pieces of advice

- Save as often as possible, each time you get an item or you solve a puzzle.

- Try to find the four Pieces of Heart hidden in the demo. They will give you another Heart Container.

- Inspect carefully each place and each room.

- If you get stuck somewhere, try to explore the rest of the dungeon and come back later where you were stuck.

- Always beat the enemies around you: sometimes, chests appear and doors open only when a room is totally cleaned.

- Use the Map and the Compass to check the chests you may have missed.

- Do not forget the Blue Icon that always displays what action can be performed with the Space bar.

- Use whereever you can the items you will get throughout the game.
